The East End Classics Centre
The East End Classics Centre is a collaboration between schools and colleges in the East End of London and university partners, including the Faculty of Classics, University of Oxford; Wadham College, University of Oxford; the Department of History, Classics and Archaeology, Birkbeck, University of London; the Department of Greek and Latin, University College London and the Department of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology at Liverpool.
The collaboration hopes to develop and enhance the study of Classics in schools and colleges by hosting events such as academic lectures, cultural visits, trips, and summer schools, as well as providing continuing professional development, support and subject-specific training for teachers. The Centre is based at BSix Brooke House Sixth Form College in Hackney and includes the Library of the Ancient World, which is open to all students in the local area and anyone else with an interest in classical subjects and the ancient world. The Classics Centre is particularly interested in hearing from local schools and sixth form colleges in the East End of London, both those that already offer classical subjects to students and those who might be interested in offering Latin, Greek and classical subjects to students in the future. The Classics Centre is not just for students studying A-Level Classical Civilization, Latin, or Greek. Most of the events are open to the public and to anyone who is interested regardless of school or college or subject studied.
Anyone interested in the East End Classics Centre should contact Xavier Murray-Pollock (firstname.lastname@example.org). Local schools and colleges in East London are particularly encouraged to contact us (both schools and colleges with or without current Classics provisions).
